Have you noticed your child squinting at
objects? Does he complain of headaches or an itching in his eyes? Be alert!
This could mean a low vision problem.
Low vision, sometimes, occurs naturally in
children. Other than genetics, there can be many possible reasons for this
problem among the newborns. A delay in child delivery results in lack of oxygen,
which, in turn, can affect the child’s eyesight. Similarly, inappropriate handling
or less than satisfactory pre-natal care can also have several dire
consequences including brain trauma and weakened eyesight.
The important thing here is to assure a proper
and timely eye exam for your child, at an early age, so that the child starts wearing
prescription glasses with a UV protection factor before his or her eyesight
degenerates any further. Safe estimates say
that around 5-10 pre-schoolers out of every 100 and 25% of all school-aged
children in UK suffer from low vision problem. Most of these children can be
completely cured with treatment and vision glasses if diagnosed early. The
simple reason is the child’s higher internal response and adaptability to the
treatment at a younger age.
We, at Specsdirect2u, understand the importance of having a proper
diagnosis and treatment for your child at an early age. Optometric studies
suggest children should undergo their first eye exam at an early age of 6
months. The next eye exam should be at 3 years of age and then again, when they
are 5-6 years old. We offer comprehensive eye exam services at all our four locations in Glasgow. However, if you do not wish for people to
know your child’s eye problems then we completely understand your need for
privacy and can visit for your child’s eye exam at your home.
Have a proper diagnosis with us and then we
will provide you your choice of frames and lenses for your child. In the event that your
child’s problem cannot be cured with glasses alone, we will guide you to a
reliable eye doctor for further advice.
Even if your child’s vision does not need
correction, it is always good to have their eyes tested every 2 years or so.
Also, being frank and honest with us would go a long way towards getting your
child a proper diagnosis and treatment. Tell us if you have a family history of
eye related problems or if your child has had any surgeries or treatments before
coming to us for an eye exam. If you have any questions to ask, please do not
hesitate to give us a call or visit. We can also be contacted online for an appointment.
