So You Think You Have Pinkeye

Spring is here and bring lots of plant pollen mixed with winter germs which creates the perfect scene for pinkeye. Itchy, swollen, runny eyes are technically known as conjunctivitis, which can actually take three forms: viral, bacterial and allergic.

The allergic type, which isn't contagious, often surfaces when flowers start to re-emerge.

How to Tell What Type You Have :

  • The Allergic kind tends to be watery and itchy and sometimes affects both eyes.
  • The Viral kind is likely to have a watery discharge and the eyes might be sensitive to light. The discharge associated with bacterial conjunctivitis tends to be thicker, with more mucus.
It is good to know what type you have as the treatment is different.

How can you prevent conjunctivitis?

  • Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious. If someone in your house has the this type of the disease and touches a surface such as a doorknob, the virus can live on that surface for several weeks.
  • Bacterial conjunctivitis, while contagious, doesn't spread as easily, he says. Stay home for as long as the eyes are red and watering.
Make sure to discard any tissues used immediately. Make sure whoever is affected isn't sharing towels or pillows—or anything that comes into contact with the eyes or hands. And once your home is rid of disease, disinfect major surfaces and wash sheets and towels. Computers are an unexpected place where viruses can linger, so make sure to wipe down your keyboard.

If you are ever unsure about any problems with your eyes feel free to contact us, and book in to get your eyes checked.

Early Signs of Autism May be Observed Through Eye Exams

Did you know that a variety of health conditions can be detected through eye exams?

The results of a new study show that the earliest signs of autism may be detected by monitoring the eyes and watching for fixation on certain objects.

Researchers used equipment to track the movements of babies’ eyes as they watched videos of caregivers. These infants were followed from birth to age three and were divided into groups based on their likelihood of developing an autism spectrum disorder.

Infants placed in the high-risk group were those with a sibling already diagnosed with autism, while the low-risk group included infants with no autistic siblings.

As the potential to diagnose more and more systemic conditions and disorders through eye exams, it reminds us of the importance of making sure eye exams are a must.

Specsdirect2u bring you Oakley Sunglasses

Oakley Sunglasses FLAK JACKET® XLJ GOLF SPECIFIC SKU# 03-921 £175

Ever wondered why 7 out of 10 of the top cyclists in Tour de France wore Oakley sunglasses?

Was it sponsorship reasons or were these sunglasses actually worth the extra cost?

These sleek-looking, minimally designed, affordable sunglasses are probably the most versatile in the world of outdoor sports. I have tried various types of sports glasses for cycling but not Oakley. After a few weeks trial I must conclude Oakley glasses are fantastic and I wouldn't look elsewhere for my cycling glasses.

I personally thought Flak Jack frames were fantastic because of the design and comfort. I loved the great fit even when I had my helmet on. I found the lenses felt nice and strong and also gave good protection around the eyes which prevented the wind in my eyes causing them to water.

Oakley lenses also protect eyes from impacts. Reflective surfaces like tarmac and water normally cause really bad glare, but the polarised lenses block 99 per cent of glare keeping your view ahead nice and clear.

For me these are my favorite glasses that I will continue to use for when I go out cycling.

Some other good points I found are :

1. Lens durability :

  • Oakley lenses are called Plutonite lenses and these lenses are made from impact resistant polycarbonate lenses.
  • These lenses go through stringent ball bearing tests to ensure they do not break.
  • The lenses are moulded unlike normal curved plastic lenses found in other sports lenses.

2. Unique XYZ technology used in producing Plutonite lenses :

  • Distortion eliminated are lenses not curved.
  • 100% UVA rays which cause harmful ageing filtered out.
  • UVB rays which cause burning also filtered out.
  • UVC rays which cause cancer also filtered out.
  • 100% harmful blue right is also filtered out.

3. Practicality/Versatility of frames :

  • Due to their smaller size the Flak Jackets are much less invasive
  • Available in both standard and larger XLJ options
  • The lenses give good protection over the eyes especially in windy conditions
These glasses are comfortable to wear, polarized, sturdy, affordable and best of all good looking when on.
At Specsdirect2u we are introducing our Oakley range with the new revamp of our website. We have a wide selection for you take a look at, and if you have any questions about any of our glasses please feel free to contact us

The Benefits Of Wearing Transition Lenses

Ask anyone about transition lenses and the first thing they usually say is it's hassle free not having to carry around a separate pair of Sunglasses in addition to their everyday Glasses. Transition lens offer you freedom from this hassle. Your financial outlay is less, and you can wear the same pair of glasses all the time - Result!

Transition lenses are also known as photochromotic lenses. They contain millions and trillions of photochromotic molecules, which make it possible to adapt to changing light conditions regardless of the environment you are in. As you move from indoors to outdoors or vice versa, your glasses will automatically adapt to the change in light shades. On a bright and sunny day, they will go dark to protect you from glare and ultraviolet rays. While indoors, the lenses will be so clear that you will feel as if you’re wearing normal prescription glasses. What more would you want?

But, that is not all. Specsdirect2u recognises the great benefits attached with these lenses.

Here are the main benefits of wearing transition lenses:

You can wear them comfortably while working on your laptop or watching TV because the darkening aspect of the lenses only responds to ultraviolet rays. Otherwise, they stay clear.

They are suitable for all ages especially, for children and elders. Both age groups have a softer and sensitive eye lens which needs the maximum protection, provided by transition lenses

People with eye problems like cataracts and diabetes can be helped. Usually these eye diseases affect night vision and transition lens will provide a better focus through increased clarity

Adaptation with the constantly changing light would protect you from squinting, eye stress and weariness.

You can even have extra active transition lenses for driving. Your vision would improve considerably.

In each of our Glasgow Optical Practices we have sample Transition lenses for you to view.  Our practice locations are Alexandra Parade, Cambuslang, Dennistoun and Tollcross.

To further fulfill our commitment to customer needs and satisfaction, we bring the choice of having transition lenses fitted into your favourite brand and design.  The brand ranges that we sell include Ray Ban, Jimmy Choo, Gucci, Boss Orange or Prada, any of the designer brands, and budget frames can be fitted with Transition lenses.  Now, you can feel proud for having a great fashion sense and health consciousness at the same time.

Remember, it is advisable to get your eyes tested every one - two years.  To book an appointment for the free home eye test visit*, all you have to do is call 0141 554 8886 and we can tell you the availability of appointments.
